Hair Loss

Alopecia ( hair loss) is caused by a variety of reasons and can occur in both men and women. Heredity, hormone imbalance, drug side effects, stress, and excessive traction are examples of issues that can result in hair loss.

Permanent Hair Loss

Hair LossAndrogenic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss. It affects roughly one-third of all men and women. For men, male pattern baldness can begin early. It is typically characterized by a receding hairline at the temples and balding at the top of the head. Women who suffer from Androgenic Alopecia may experience thinning at the front, sides, or crown of the head. Women almost always maintain a front hairline, as this condition rarely provokes complete baldness.

Cicatricial (scarring) Alopecia refers to a diverse group of rare disorders that destroys the hair follicle, replaces it with scar tissue causing permanent hair loss. This kind of hair loss is usually “patchy” and can gradually occur without any symptoms or become rapidly progressive, accompanied by itching and pain. The level of severity of the affected areas may vary. It can range from the scalp being itchy with minimal redness to severe with multiple pustules, skin pigment changes, tenderness, draining sinuses, and more. Cicatricial Alopecia often occurs in otherwise healthy men and women and can happen at any age.

Temporary Hair Loss

Alopecia Areata usually occurs in small, round, smooth patches. This disease doesn't extend beyond a few bare patches on the scalp, but it can cause patchy hair loss on any area that has hair, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and beard. In rare cases, it can progress to cause hair loss over the entire body. If the hair loss includes your entire scalp, the condition is called Alopecia Totalis. If it involves your whole body, it's called Alopecia Universalis. Soreness and itching may precede the hair loss, but symptoms are often minimal. Telogen effluvium is a condition that results in sudden, but temporary hair loss or hair thinning. This is usually the case when dealing with a significant illness or major life stress. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing, washing, or after a gentle tug to your hair.

Traction Alopecia is a result of excessive stress on the hair follicles due to hair styles such as ponytails, braids, cornrows, or using tight rollers. Hair loss from this condition typically occurs between the rows or in the area where hair is being pulled tightly. This may result is bald patches, often at the front of the temple or other areas of the hairline.

Hair Loss in Women

Women make up approximately forty percent of American hair loss sufferers. ThisHair Loss condition can be absolutely devastating to a woman’s self image and emotional well being. Currently, Minoxidil is the only FDA approved treatment for female pattern hair loss. Below you will find a list of other treatments currently being used to treat hair loss in women. Some of these drugs have not been approved by the FDA specifically for hair loss, but they are used “off label” to treat this condition.

Hair Loss in Men

Hair Loss in MenMale pattern baldness (MPB) or Androgenetic Alopecia accounts for over 95% of hair loss in American men. Diseases, extreme stress, medication side effects, and heredity are some of the main reasons for MPB. In many cases, this kind of hair loss can begin as early as the age of 21. Two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss by the age of 35, and by age 50, 85% of those men will suffer significant thinning hair. Like women, men also suffer the emotional side effects hair loss. In addition to low self esteem, men are affected in their interpersonal relationships and their professional lives, sometime to the point where some men change their career because of their hair loss.

Currently, there are only two FDA approved products that have been clinically proven to stop or prevent hair loss, Finasteride and Minoxidil. Minoxidil (loniten), the only FDA approved topical medication, can be purchased over –the-counter without a prescription, is not as effective for men as it is for women. Finasteride (Proscar or Propecia) is the oral medication FDA approved to treat hair loss in men. Beyond over-the-counter products or prescription medications, hair restoration is another popular alternative to treat hair loss.
